Stripping membranes is done at the end of pregnancy. Stripping membranes is also called sweeping the membranes. In stripping membranes, doctor or midwife will put his or her finger inside the opening of the cervix and this kind of method is done during the vaginal exam. When a doctor or midwife does the stripping membranes, he does the separation of the membrane from the uterus. A pregnant woman will feel uncomfortable when a doctor or midwife is doing this. Some side effects of doing the stripping membranes are spotting or bleeding, feeling achy and irregular constructions.

The membrane here is called the amniotic sac. The amniotic sac is a double membrane and in this double membrane the fetus develops within the uterus. The amniotic sac has a function to keep the baby from the injury during the pregnancy. It also has a function in facilitating the movement of the baby because the amniotic sac gives the room.

As it has been stated previously that stripping the membranes is done at the end of pregnancy and the exact time is around the 40th week of gestation. When you have reached that period, then your doctor or midwife will suggest you the stripping membranes. This is a method in order to stimulate the labor or the childbirth. The stimulation which is done by the stripping membranes is to release the prostaglandin hormones. This is good because the release soften the cervix in order to prepare it for labor.

This method is done when a pregnant woman does the routine exam during the pregnancy. As it has been stated above that a doctor or a midwife does the stripping membranes by putting their finger into the opening of the cervix.

This condition forces a pregnant woman to be taken to the hospital as soon. Membrane stripping is not allowed for a woman who experiences or has the abnormalities in placenta, a woman who is warned not to deliver normally, and a woman who suffers from an infection which is called Group B Strep.


Those are the information about the stripping membranes during the pregnancy. Although membrane stripping is a method to help in stimulating the labor, it also causes a risk for a pregnant woman. Membrane stripping cannot be done haphazardly, but it is done under the control of a doctor or a midwife.
