Make sure your finger is clean and has washed before inserting it to the vagina. The cleanness of your finger is really important to prevent infection. You can use the middle finger to be inserted to the vagina. If you are in a condition before the ovulation, the cervix will be placed as far as your middle finger will go, after the ovulation, the cervical position will drop and feel hard if you touch it, just like touching he tip of nose.
This position usually called the low cervix position. Cervical position in early pregnancy will rise again but not as high as before the ovulation or before pregnancy. In this condition, your cervix will be softer than before. Be careful if you have tilted uterus because it will be difficult to find the position of the cervix.
